If you’re superstitious, don’t freak out: as soon as we open The book of backyards, we come across a black cat – one of those half-stray ones that cross our paths every once in a while. His name is Sneakers and he lives in a number of gardens, picking the owner and shade that best suits the particular season or his feline cravings of a given day.

In this book, we are just like Sneakers. We don’t go into anyone’s home. Instead, we follow stories that take place outside, near the lemon and loquat trees, along the flowerbeds and washing lines, in the ponds and veg patches, following what’s happening in eight backyards throughout the year.
