Atlas of travels and explorers
(Portuguese edition)
Once upon a time, we didn’t know the limits of our planet and many areas of the world remained isolated, with no connection to others.
We didn’t know of the places and species that existed in other regions, nor of their peoples and cultures.
In order to to learn all there was to know about this world we live in, we had to hit the road. Riding a donkey or a camel, sailing a boat or on foot, we left our homes to go out in search of the unknown, and came back with extraordinary news and novelties from other places.
The journeys undertaken by monks, botanists, traders, sailors and artists brought important contributions to our understanding of the planet, and to our awareness of the existence of each other. These travellers — from all times and places — are the lead characters of this book, where you’ll find plenty of maps and many, many adventures.

What they say
The profiles humanize the historical figures, revealing the circumstances of each person’s life, the motivation for their quests — not just business interests and religious demands, but also the eternal human desire to face the unknown. The freedom and courage of the travellers are masterfully interpreted by the versatility and incredibly wide range of techniques and vision of the artist Bernardo Carvalho.
BolognaRagazzi Awards, 2019
Another essential book for young readers which, in this era of knowing everything before we set off, recalls a certain primal instinct and hunger for travel. If it isn’t the best children’s book of the year, it must be close.
Pedro Miguel Silva, Deus me livro, November 2018
This atlas has beautiful maps, yes (or should we say “coloured paintings and black and white drawings from another world”), but mainly it brings with it stories of courage and vision.
Prateleira de Baixo blog, May 2018
An ode to curiosity, to the eagerness to find others, to learn about their homes, their habits. (…) Don’t be surprised if the readers of this atlas find themselves influenced by a craving to go out and discover what’s beyond.
Sara Figueiredo Costa, Parágrafo magazine, 20/04/2018
The informative nature of this atlas feeds a discourse which challenges us with its questions and reflective prompts.
PNL 2027, November 2018
Atlas of Travels and Explorers is as much made by its pertinent contents as it is by its Chinese ink illustrations. People, places and maps appear in black and white, in a dynamic which perfectly complements the stories being narrated.
Estante magazine, 20/04/2018
The Portuguese publishing market is lacking informative books with a fresh perspective in terms of their subject, discourse and design as an aesthetic object. Informative books which surprise us and which value non-fiction. This latest picturebook by Planeta Tangerina fulfils those three criteria (…).
(This book) leaves the reader much more curious than before they began. Just like any good journey, indeed.
Andreia Brites, Blimunda magazine, June 2018
